Radiant House was conceived and executed over an 18-month period. The house was revealed in August, 2013.

NBC Bay Area’s Brent Cannon sat down with two members of the Santa Clara team headed to the 2013 Solar Decathlon. They discussed Santa Clara’s new strategy in this competition where students build a solar-powered home from scratch.
March 3, 2012 – First Design Charrette
The first design charrette brought together students from Santa Clara University and the University of San Francisco to brainstorm about the house’s design.
March 5, 2012 – SCU Solar Decathlon 2013 DOE Competition Video
The Department of Energy (DOE) asked each team to make a one minute video showing their excitement for the competition and explaining why they thought they were going to do well.

Bosch sponsored a trip for some of our team members to Madrid, Spain, to observe part of the European Solar Decathlon Competition.
September 13, 2012 – Father Reites & Head of Rules for Solar Decathlon Europe
The head of rules from Solar Decathlon Europe helped arrange our house tours and saw that we were well taken care of in Madrid. We gave her a few SCU Engineering items as a small token of our appreciation.

We had an amazing turn out for our first meeting of the 2012 – 2013 school year. We are excited to see so much interest in the project as we approach just one year before the competition.

We opened Refract House up to Lisa P. Jackson, the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and her son. After touring the house, we also got to give them an introduction to Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering.
October 29, 2012 – We Have Ethicists!
The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University is sponsoring two student ethicists to research ethical issues in sustainability and construction and to help with outreach efforts.

November 10, 2012 – Citizen School’s Tour of Refract House
Over the course of the day, we had over 150 middle school students tour 2009’s Refract House to learn about green technology and the fun side of science and engineering.

We ran into members of the Middlebury 2013 Solar Decathlon team at the conference and expo.
November 20, 2012 – Design Development Deliverable Revisions
After two weeks of heavy work, we hit submitted all of our deliverable revisions.
December 12, 2012 – Media Training
Five team members spent the morning working on their media skills in preparation for future press events.
January 4, 2013 – All 20 Computer-Animated Walkthroughs Made Available
The Department of Energy released the computer animated walk-throughs of each team’s house.
January 11, 2013 to January 12, 2013 – Irvine Design Development Workshop
Fifteen team members traveled to the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, CA, for meetings with with contest organizers and for a first look at the competition site.
January 11, 2013 – Solar Decathlon Teams Visit Great Park
The Orange County Register did a piece on all 20 Solar Decathlon teams’ first visit to the Orange County Great Park. The teams got to meet with competition officials and explore the home of the 2013 Solar Decathlon.
January 12, 2013 – Team Members Meet the Orange County Alumni Chapter
A handful of team members presented our project to the Orange County alumni chapter. The alumni were very excited and eager to get involved. Excitement is building!
January 19, 2013 – Prototype Up and Running
Team members installed the first solar panels onto our roof module prototype.

February 7, 2013 – Design Development Summary
A short video was put together by the DOE featuring the 20 teams that attended the Design Development workshop at the Orange County Great Park in January.
February 14, 2013 – Deliverable Submitted
The team successfully submitted construction documentation including the Building Information Model (BIM), drawings, and Project Manual, as well as our final Health and Safety Plan, final target construction cost, and the first set of stamped structural drawings and structural calculations.
March 7, 2013 – First Google Hangout
Santa Clara students from the Radiant House team had their first virtual meeting with Mr. Bedley’s fifth grade class. The team gave a tour of 2009’s Refract House and an introduction to 2013’s Radiant House!
March 15, 2013 – Power Tool Safety Training
Hallmark Contruction provided a power tool safety training session at the construction site to help students gain experiece with the tools they will be using to construct Radiant House.
March 25, 2013 – Safety Training with Cupertino Electric
Members of the team completed a variety of safety trainings with Cupertino Electric, including heat stress, fall protection, and electrical trainings.
April 5, 2013 – Deliverable Submitted
The team successfully resubmitted our construction documentation, including the Building Information Model (BIM), drawings, and Project Manual. The documentation was submitted more than an hour before the deadline, a team record!
April 15, 2013 – SOS Steel Tour
Team members were shown around the SOS Steel factory floor. They were given the opportunity to watch the fabrication of our steel and the process that all manufactured steel goes through.
April 18, 2013 – Google Hangout 2
Radiant House team members hosted a second Google Hangout with fifth graders from Plaza Vista School in Irvine, CA. This hangout focused on the electrical systems of the house, specifically the PV system. The electrical team leader, Maggie Jones, walked the kids through how photovoltaics work and how they will be used to power Radiant House.
April 22, 2013 – SD Twitter Chat
Santa Clara’s Solar Decathlon team, along with a number of the 2013 teams, hosted a Twitter chat to bring the ideas of the decathlon to the larger conversation surrounding Earth Day.

The San Jose Mercury News wrote an article about Santa Clara’s and Stanford’s SD teams and how students at both universities are leaving their desks to tackle an even larger project.
April 25, 2013 -Radiant House Ground Breaking Ceremony
The ceremonial ground breaking of Radiant House was a huge success! With inspiring speeches made by President of Santa Clara University, Father Michael Engh, Dean Godfrey Mungal of the School of Engineering, and Santa Clara Mayor, Jamie Matthews, the event was a fantastic way to kick off the construction process!
April 26, 2013 – Radiant House Steel Delivery
A few team members were out on site before the sun was up for the delivery of the steel for Radiant House. Students worked hard to get all the pieces unloaded and set by early afternoon.
April 27, 2013 – Construction Kick Off
With the steel delivered, the team was able to start construction of the house.
May 3, 2013 – Bamboo Delivery
The team’s shipping container full of bamboo arrived on campus from Vietnam. The team quickly unloaded the container and we are excited to learn how to build our bamboo joists.
May 5, 2013 – Construction Kick Off Celebration BBQ
The steel is in and construction has officially started! In celebration, the team made themselves at home by having a BBQ on their construction site.
May 15, 2013 – Bamboo Joist Testing
After learning how to build the Bamboo Joists, the team has been working hard to master the steps and create as many as possible in our structural lab on campus. Today, the team met with a group of civil engineering seniors to test the joists that had been built, and we’re glad to report that they all passed with flying colors!
May 19, 2013 – Bamboo Joist Installation
The team began installing joists on site today. It was very exciting to see the whole process of taking the joists from raw pieces of bamboo to finished structural elements.
May 23, 2013 – Google Hangout 3
For our third Google Hangout with the students at Plaza Vista school in Irvine, we brought in the controls team and played with the new Radiant House App.
June 6, 2013 – A Night of Wine and Innovation
The team hosted a Night of Wine and Innovation at the Testarossa Winery. Team members gave short presentations about Radiant House and mingled with guests over drinks and appetizers. The fundraising event was a huge success and made for a beautiful evening.

Father James Reites was interviewed by NBC Bay Area about his experience as a mentor for Santa Clara’s past and present Solar Decathlon teams.
August 3, 2013 to July 27, 2013 – Flooring Staining
Team members spent 13 hours in one day getting flooring ready for the house.
August 8, 2013 – Radiant House Pinot Noir
Testarossa winery added a new Solar Decathlon wine to their catalog. All proceeds from the sale benefit Radiant House.
August 22, 2013 – Final Deliverable Submitted
The Radiant House As-Built drawings, Project Manual, jury narrratives, final website, and audiovisual presentation were submitted as the last deliverable before the competition.
